Q: Can anyone attend Council meetings?
A: All Council meetings are open to the public. If you would like to address Council with a particular issue, a delegation should be requested prior to the meeting. Contact the Municipal office two weeks prior to the day you wish to attend to make arrangements to be placed on the agenda.
Q: When are taxes due?
A: Every tax is due the last business day of October. It is for the current year's taxes.
Q: Can I pay my taxes through the bank?
A: Yes - Internet banking and Telpay is available for tax and utility payments through most major financial institutions. As well tax payments can be made in person at Oakbank Credit Union for the month of October each year.
Q: Can I pay my taxes on a monthly basis?
A: Yes - Ratepayers are now able to apply for a preauthorized tax payment plan. Application forms are available either at the Municipal Office or under Municipal Services, Property Tax on this website.
Q: What can I do when my assessment is too high?
A: The Provincial Assessment Office is located in Selkirk. Any questions about your assessment should be directed to that office. The toll free number is 1-866-262-9786. Assessments can be appealed through the Board of Revision and should be directed to the Municipal office. The date of the Board of Revision, and the deadline for appeals is announced annually, generally in October or November. For 2012, the date is December 6, 2011. Appeal deadline is November 21, 2011.
Q: How much are tax certificates?
A: The fee for a tax certificate is $30.00. We accept a fax request along with a copy of your remittance to expedite the process.
Q: What utility charges are invoiced by the R.M. of Springfield?
A: Certain areas of the R.M. are billed for water consumption and sewer surcharge. These bills are prepared on a quarterly basis and can be paid in advance. Please contact the Municipal office for additional information.
Q: Am I eligible for the Resident Homeowners Tax Assistance?
A: The property must be your principal residence, and you must have occupied it as of January first of the year of application. You must not be receiving credit for another residence. Once approved you do not need to apply for it on a yearly basis. Should you fail to apply, you can still receive the credit through your Income Tax return
Q: Where can I register and pay for recreation programs?
You can register by calling 444-4119 or by E-mailing recreation@rmofspringfield.ca. You can mail your payments to Box 219, Oakbank, MB, R0E 1J0, or drop by the municipal or recreation offices. Make your cheque out to the Springfield Recreation Commission.
Q: How can the recreation office help advertise my program or event?
The Springfield Recreation Commission (SRC) publishes The Springfield Times, a newsletter of recreational and cultural events that is mailed to most homes in the Springfield area. E-mail your notice to rsterritt@rmofspringfield.ca or drop it off at the Municipal Office at 628 Main Street in Oakbank. The deadlines are the second last Friday of February, May, August and November. We can post your notice if space is available. Your item may be eligible for promotion on the municipal website. Contact 444-4119 for more information. Public posterboards are available at the Anola Lucky Dollar and Cooks Creek General Store. They are operated by local clubs, but the groups can accommodate your items when space allows. Finally, the SRC publishes a weekly column in the Review and Clipper newspapers. E-mail us your notice by Tuesday morning if you want it in the following week's column.
Q: Can I appear in front of the Springfield Recreation Commission?
Recreation groups interested in obtaining funding or feedback on how to proceed with projects may appear in front of the Springfield Recreation Commission. The commission meets on a monthly basis, usually on the third Wednesday at 7:00 PM. You can be added to the agenda by notifying the Recreation Office up to 15 days prior to the meeting date. This allows us to send your information to the commission members so they can properly consider your request.
