WASTE & RECYCLING
The Rural Municipality of Springfield has recently contracted the services of BFI Canada to manage its waste and recycling programs at the transfer stations.
If you have any questions, or need information on how you can reduce, reuse and recycle, contact one of the attendants on duty or, alternatively, the Public Works Department at 444-2241 between 7:00 am and 4:30 pm Monday through Thursday or between 7:00 am and 3:30 pm on Friday. As of May 2, 2006 Waste Management Inc. of Winnipeg is the recycling contractor for all communities. Oakbank has both waste and recycling scheduled for Thursday pickup. Dugald, Vivian, Glass, Anola, Cooks Creek and Hazelridge will have both waste and recycling scheduled for Tuesday pickup.
Please have your waste and recycling at the curbside by 7:00 am on the day of pick up. Proper recycling procedures apply to both depot and curbside.
Items that can be recycled and the proper procedure for recycling these products is as follows:
- plastic pop bottles (rinsed, crushed, discard lids)
- steel (tin) and aluminum cans (rinsed)
- #1 and #2 plastic containers (discard lids)
- juice boxes – also called tetra pacs, or aseptic containers (flattened, discard
straws) milk and juice cartons (rinsed, crushed)
- glass jars and bottles (remove and discard lids)
- Newspaper
- Magazines
- Envelopes (discard cellophane window)
- Telephone books
- Mixed paper
- Junk mail
- All types of cardboard (at curbside folded into 3x5 squares and tied).
Some items that are not recyclable at this time are:
- window glass
- facial tissue
- light bulbs
- paper towels
- china & ceramics
- aerosol cans
- mirrors
- aluminum foil
- pie plates
- styrofoam packaging
- hangers
- cellophane
- milk bags
All recyclable materials can be placed co-mingled in the bin provided at the transfer station. Some new items that can now be recycled are #4, #5 and #7 plastics. These include such containers as margarine, ketchup, plastic storage containers—please check the number on the plastic material to see if it is recyclable. If there is no number it is not a recyclable material.
#6 plastic material is still not accepted at this time.
At curbside all material listed above can be placed loosely in your blue box. Please place newspapers in a plastic clear bag, or shopping bag left open in your blue box or beside your blue box. Cardboard should be folded 3x5 square, tied and placed beside your blue box.
